(TheLibertyRevolution.com)- Chicago has long struggled with violent crime, and Democratic leaders in the city haven’t been able to do anything about it. Over the Independence Day weekend, that violence truly became out of control, with more than 70 people shot in the city, 14 of whom died.
It comes at a time when Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot faces increased scrutiny over her running of the city, and her constant pandering to the most far-left elements of the Democratic Party.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that some 74 people were shot over the weekend, 14 fatally, by 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 5. If you believe the Chicago Tribune instead, the number was actually 80 people shot, and 17 people killed, by 5:29 p.m. on Sunday.
Whichever number is accurate, it’s too high.
One of the people who tragically died was a seven-year-old girl. Natalia Wallace was shot in the head at 7 p.m. on Saturday in South Austin. Wallace was outside enjoying celebrations with her family.
Another child that was killed in a shooting was a 14-year-old boy. He was killed in Englewood later on Saturday evening.
The chilling shootings come one week after a one-year-old child and a ten-year-old were killed in Chicago.
Rev. Michael L. Pfleger of Saint Sabina Church in Chicago told the New York Times that “The Windy City is becoming the Bloody City,” and said that the city was seeing the worst, most violent period in the 45 years he has worked there.
“I have seen the despair, hopelessness and anger all mixed together at the level it is right now,” he said.
More than 336 people have been killed in Chicago this year already, according to the Chicago Police Department. The city is on track to beat the record rate of 778 deaths that the city saw in 2016, making it one of the most dangerous cities in the United States.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot appealed to young men before the Independence Day weekend, asking them to “think about the number of children that have been killed just in the last two weeks.”
Maybe appealing to young men just isn’t as effective as a well-funded police department, Mayor.
