China Reports Coronavirus Found On Packaging Of Frozen Food Imports

( The coronavirus has been found on frozen food in three Chinese cities over the last four days.

Thursday, Shenzhen health officials said they took a sample of frozen chicken wings that were imported from Brazil, and it tested positive for coronavirus. The health officials were doing routine screening on imports of both seafood and meat. These are being done ever since the June outbreak in Beijing that was linked to a major wholesale food market.

Everyone who potentially came in contact with contaminated food products were tested and traced, the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission said. All those people tested negative. The commission warned Shenzhen’s 12 million people that:

“All citizens should be cautious in buying imported frozen meat products and aquatic products in recent days.”

Earlier this week, a restaurant in Wuhu had frozen shrimp that tested positive for coronavirus. The shrimp was imported from Ecuador, and again, the testing was done as part of routine inspections.

In the eastern China port of Yantai, health officials detected the virus on frozen seafood outer packaging. It wasn’t clear exactly where that frozen seafood was being imported from.

In July, health officials across China reported finding coronavirus on packaging of imported frozen foods in Xiamen, Pingxiang and Dalian.

On Thursday, the country reported 19 new confirmed cases of coronavirus. That marked the first time it dropped below 20 since July 30, when a spike of 127 new coronavirus cases was recorded.

The country where the coronavirus originated has reported 84,756 cases and 4,634 deaths from COVID-19 to date. There are plenty of reasons for skepticism when it comes to these numbers, though, as no one really knows what the real situation is in China.

Worldwide, there have been more than 20 million confirmed cases of coronavirus, but more than half of them are in India, Brazil and the United States. India’s death tally exceeded 47,000 on Thursday, which marks the fourth highest number of any country.

In total, the Indian health ministry has reported 2.4 million cases.

Each country has taken a different approach to curbing the spread of the coronavirus. New Zealand has often been praised as one of the most effective for their swift action and full lockdowns.

For example, the country shut down the largest city in New Zealand on Wednesday after four people were confirmed to have coronavirus. The prime minister of the country, Jacinda Ardern, also imposed strict social-distancing measures once again across the remainder of the country.

New Zealand hadn’t seen a local transmission of coronavirus in the last three months. On Thursday, health officials in the country reported 13 community infections, all of which were linked to those four cases.

Since the outbreak, New Zealand has recorded only 1,239 cases and 22 deaths from COVID-19. As Prime Minister Ardern said this week about the new cases:

“Once again, we are reminded of how tricky this virus is and how easily it can spread. Going hard and early is still the best course of action.”
