The bizarre attacks, which were revealed on Wednesday, see U.S. personnel in consulates and embassies all over the world experiencing weird symptoms for apparently no reason. Some people have experienced hearing high-pitched noises, and others have said that they experience “pulses of energy” in the head. Other symptoms include general pain, a sense of dizziness or nausea, and other weird sensations.
The symptoms being reported by U.S. personnel since 2016 make up what is known as “Havana Syndrome,” which was given its name after American spies started experiencing the symptoms just a handful of years ago in Cuba.
U.S. officials believe that over 200 people have been affected by the symptoms so far, with many of those who experience it reporting ongoing symptoms that affect their ability to do their jobs properly.
Vienna has the second-highest number of incidents of Havana Syndrome, which is interesting given that this is the location of indirect talks taking place between the United States and Iran. The discussions, which are being facilitated by officials from various European nations, are aimed at bringing Iran – the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world – back into compliance with Barack Obama’s failed 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
While the exact cause of the syndrome is officially unknown, a study from the National Academics of Science, Engineering and Medicine claimed in 2020 that the most likely cause of the symptoms is a direct pulse of radio frequency energy. It could mean that foreign agents, possibly from Iran, are directing these pulses of energy at Americans without them knowing about it.
The CIA is reportedly hoping that an unnamed chief of the task force who took down Osama bin Laden will help them track down whoever is responsible for causing inflicting this pain on American personnel globally.
