(TheLibertyRevolution.com)- Last week, Republican Pennsylvania Senate candidate Mehmet Oz’s campaign announced that if elected, he would support legislation to codify same-sex marriage into federal law.
In a statement to The Hill on Tuesday, Dr. Oz’s communications director reaffirmed the candidate’s belief that gay couples “should have the same freedom to get married as straight couples.”
Several Republican Senators have voiced their opposition to the “Respect for Marriage Act” which has already passed the House of Representatives with a vote of 267 to 157.
Ten Republicans would have to support the measure to get the bill over the 60-vote threshold in the Senate. But so far, ten Republicans have not stepped up to say they would vote for the bill.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio recently called the bill a “stupid waste of time.” He blasted the Democrats for pushing unnecessary legislation at a time when Americans are struggling with skyrocketing consumer prices and 40-year high inflation.
Rubio said he refuses to focus on an agenda “dictated by a bunch of affluent, elite liberals and a bunch of Marxist misfits” that currently control the Democrat Party.
The bill was introduced for two reasons: to bolster the Democrat Party’s fearmongering claim that the Supreme Court that just overturned Roe v. Wade would also be coming for gay marriage, and to have yet another needless piece of legislation that Democrats could use to portray Republicans as bigots.
That’s it. That’s the whole reason they’re ramming the “Respect for Marriage Act” through.
Same-sex marriage is already permitted in every state.
This isn’t about protecting the right of gay couples to marry; it’s a Democrat midterm election strategy.
Marriage is a state issue, not a federal one.
And while many Republican lawmakers probably support same-sex marriage, that doesn’t mean they will support passing a federal law imposing same-sex marriage in all fifty states.
In short, Congress is overstepping its authority here.
