(TheLibertyRevolution.com)- It was reported last week that Netflix has signed on to license and stream Johnny Depp’s next project, the French period drama, “La Favorite,” in which Depp will portray King Louis XV.
According to Bloomberg News, Netflix isn’t financing the production of the film which is being directed by Maiwenn Le Besco and is scheduled for release in French theaters next year. Instead, the streaming company has licensed to stream the film 15 months after it is released in France.
“La Favorite” is Depp’s first film role since he was shunned by Hollywood over his ex-wife, Amber Heard’s claims of domestic violence. His last feature film was in 2020.
Since then, Depp won a defamation suit against Heard over those domestic violence claims.
But filming in France instead of Hollywood may mean Depp isn’t quick to forgive.
“La Favorite” will also be Depp’s first time acting in a French-language film.
The movie is scheduled to begin shooting this summer on location in France, including at the Palace of Versailles.
Director Maiwenn Le Besco will star alongside Depp, playing Madame du Barry, the infamous mistress of King Louis XV.
After a recent deal with French cinema guilds, Netflix and other streaming services are expected to spend a portion of their revenue on local films. Netflix announced that it would spend $40.7 million on French films in 2022. It has also had great success with French series like “Call My Agent!” and “Lupin.”
