(TheLibertyRevolution.com)- George Santos, a newly elected Republican representative for New York, admitted on Monday that he had lied about his work experience and educational background during the campaign.
Santos, who will represent a portion of Long Island in the House of Representatives, admitted to the lies but insisted that it would not prevent him from serving his entire two-year term.
He said, “I am not a criminal. I won’t let the controversy stop me from being a successful legislator. I’ll be successful. I’ll do well.”
Only a few weeks remain until Santos takes the oath of office, and his professional background and affiliation with a particular religion have drawn criticism.
Some questioned whether he was Jewish, as he claimed in his campaign biography after he stated that his grandparents were born in Ukraine and fled the Holocaust by first going to Belgium and then Brazil.
Additionally, according to reports from last week, Santos’ claims that he worked for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and was employed in the financial sector could not be corroborated.
Santos acknowledged that he “never worked directly” for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs during a Monday interview, indicating that he should have chosen his words more carefully.
Santos claimed he worked for Link Bridge, a company that conducted business with Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.
Santos claimed that as part of his work for Link Bridge, he facilitated “capital introductions” between clients and investors, and the two financial institutions involved were limited partnerships with who Link Bridge worked
Santos also admitted to the Post that he never received his college diploma, despite claiming to have received one from Baruch in 2010.
“I didn’t complete a degree program at any college or university. I’m ashamed and regret embellishing my resume; I’m sorry about that. In life, we make stupid decisions.”
Santos claimed to be a Catholic despite his grandmother having told him tales of being Jewish and converting to Catholicism.
Even though Santos was out as gay, he was suspected to be lying about his marital status, as well, because he was married to a woman until 2020. He said he married a woman for five years but is now with a gay man.
Additionally, he admitted to being a deadbeat tenant in Sunnyside, Queens, and said his mother’s illness had caused the family to incur significant medical debt.
