Ted Cruz Wants To Play Against China In Olympics And Beat Them

(TheLibertyRevolution.com)- While many politicians have been calling for the US to boycott the upcoming 2022 Beijing Olympics to protest both China’s human rights abuses and as a rebuke against the COVID pandemic, Senator Ted Cruz is of a different mind.

Back in March, Senator Cruz had written an op-ed for Fox News urging the International Olympic Committee to come to its senses and move the 2022 Winter Games out of Beijing. But now that it’s a fait accompli, Cruz believes the US should not boycott but instead, “kick their commie asses.”

Last week in an interview with Real Clear Investigations’ Ben Weingarten, former President Trump said the US shouldn’t pull out of the Beijing games because it would be “unfair to the athletes.” Trump said that boycotting the games would be seen by the rest of the world as “sour grapes,” adding “You go. You compete. You win.”

In tweeting the link to the interview, Senator Cruz agreed. “Yep,” he tweeted. “The US should not boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics. Instead, we should go to Beijing, compete, and then kick their commie asses.”

In March 1980, President Jimmy Carter announced that the US would boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics scheduled to take place in Moscow.

What prompted this move was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Carter had ordered that Moscow withdraw all Soviet forces out of Afghanistan by February 1980. When Moscow failed to comply with Carter’s demands, Carter announced the Olympic boycott.

Canada, West Germany and Japan joined the US in boycotting the Moscow Olympics. However, despite his efforts to sway them, Carter could not get the UK, France, Australia or Greece to join in the boycott as well.

Like President Trump objections to a boycott of Beijing, many Americans objected to the 1980 boycott because it was viewed as punishing the American athletes who worked so hard to qualify.

In retaliation for Carter boycotting the Moscow Olympics, the Soviet Union boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympic Games held in Los Angeles.
