(TheLibertyRevolution.com)- On Wednesday, despite having widespread support from Republicans and Democrats, a resolution introduced by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to remove US troops from Syria was defeated.
If H.Con. Res. 21 passed the House; it instructed President Joe Biden to pull all U.S. troops out of Syria within 180 days.
The measure was a resolution under the War Powers Act; thus, the House had to approve it. But, the measure failed to pass on Wednesday night, with just 103 legislators voting in favor and 321 voting against. Over half of the Republicans (47) and more than half of the Democrats (56) supported the measure.
After the vote, Gaetz released a statement saying he would not relent in his efforts to lessen the United States’ involvement in international affairs. He specifically said that the United States of America plays zero involvement in Syria, and in contrast to popular belief, we are not a regional force in the Middle East. Attempts at constructing a democratic government using sand, blood, and Arab militias have been made, but no matter how hard we try, our efforts never seem to bring order out of chaos. It often leads to anarchy, and it is this anarchy that provides fertile ground for terrorist acts.
Gaetz said that although he is disappointed that his vote to stop endless wars and bring our soldiers home was unsuccessful, his struggle is far from over.
As part of his speech before the vote, Gaetz addressed his colleagues, asking them to support the resolution so that Congress may once again establish its authority to weigh in on questions of war and peace. He said congress has so many pointless debates when they get to the floor, but “discussing how we spend the trust of our fellow citizens, how we invest the wealth of the United States, and how we sacrifice the lives of our finest patriots is among the most vital work we can do.”
Gaetz said enough American blood had been spilled to darken the Middle Eastern sands and that our troops should be sent home immediately.
Gaetz also presented the “Ukraine Fatigue Resolution,” which urged Ukraine and Russia to reach a peace agreement and called on Biden to halt military and financial assistance for Ukraine.
