(TheLibertyRevolution.com)- The United States’ top expert on infectious diseases and the leader of the World Health Organization do not see eye-to-eye when it comes to COVID-19 vaccine boosters.
U.S. health officials led by Dr. Anthony Fauci are urging all Americans to get a booster shot as the Omicron variant is causing huge spikes in new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations from the virus.
At the same time, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO, doesn’t believe this is the appropriate direction wealthy countries such as the U.S. should be taking. During a briefing held last week, he said:
“No country can boost its way out of the pandemic.”
Ghebreyesus seemed particularly disappointed that the U.S. and other wealthy countries are rolling out aggressive vaccine booster programs while many other countries are still struggling to get necessary supplies to offer any vaccines to their residents.
Thus far, only half of the Member States of the WHO have reached the organization’s target of having 40% of the population vaccinated by the end of 2021, according to Ghebreyesus. He said the reason for this is the unequal distribution of vaccine supplies across the world.
Further, the new variants that are emerging could only make this inequitable access to vaccines even worse in the near future, which in turn could continue to worsen the pandemic rather than improve it.
“Blanket booster programs are likely to prolong the pandemic, rather than ending it, by diverting supply to countries that already have high levels of vaccination coverage, giving the virus more opportunity to spread and mutate.”
Despite these comments from its leader, the WHO touts the benefits that COVID-19 booster doses provide to people.
At the same time, officials with the CDC said during a briefing at the White House recently that the Omicron variant currently accounts for 73% of all positive cases in America. While this surge is happening, Fauci has said that all Americans who are eligible should get a vaccine booster.
During the briefing, he said:
“Why we emphasize the importance of booster shots — the anti-Omicron activity is about 20- to 40-fold higher in sera from boosted vaccines versus the peak in individuals who had a two-dose vaccine.”
Fauci defended his comments by saying that clinical data has showed that the efficacy of the vaccines for asymptomatic infection wanes over time for the two-dose mRNA vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech.
He said that prevention of further spread is a “multi-layered, comprehensive process, the hallmark of which is vaccination.”
Fauci isn’t the only U.S. medical expert who’s in favor of the vaccine boosters. Dr. Aaron Glatt, who serves as a spokesperson for the Infectious Diseases Society of America and is also a specialist in infectious disease, told Fox News recently:
“Clearly, boosters are extremely successful in preventing serious illness and mortality in patients six months post receiving their second mRNA vaccine dose. This will save lives and prevent hospitalizations and critical care stays.”
